Interventional Radiology is an established subspecialty of Radiology. IR physicians are trained to treat both vascular and nonvascular disease using minimally invasive techniques. With image guidance from radiological modalities such as x-rays, ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computer Tomography (CT), IR procedures are performed with small catheters and local anesthetic. This eliminates the need for large surgical incisions, shortens recovery time, and provides a cost-effective alternative for treatment of various diseases which otherwise could be debilitating. IR is often the only viable alternative for patients who are not suited for more invasive surgical therapies. |
